The Audio Engineering Society (AES), established in 1948, is one of the global professional associations in the field of audio engineering, setting standards and directions for professional audio engineering worldwide. To promote interaction and technical exchange among its members, the AES Society and its various sections organize regular technical events worldwide every year, open to all AES members for mutual exchange, collaboration, and collective improvement.

 

On June 30, 2018, the inaugural AES China Section member event was successfully held in Jinan, with the theme "Immersive and Interactive Audio Technology." Prominent figures in the Chinese audio industry, including AES Vice President Mr. Wang Shusen, Professor Li Dakang from the Communication University of China, and Professor Qu Tianshu from Peking University, attended the event.

 

Professor Li Dakang shared his insights and experiences in 5.1 surround sound production, demonstrating some representative classic surround sound recordings from his decades of work.


Professor Qu Tianshu introduced the research achievements of the Speech and Hearing Research Center at Peking University in Ambisonic immersive audio, covering aspects such as signal processing and encoding/decoding principles.

 

PCI Company, as a technical support unit, was invited to participate in the event. Mr. Wang Lengshuang, the product manager, delivered a keynote speech titled "Mainstream Immersive Multichannel Audio Technology and Applications." The speech reviewed the transition from channel-based technology to object-based immersive audio technology. Object-based technology no longer restricts the one-to-one correspondence between the source audio channel and the playback's loudspeaker channel. Instead, it is a new generation of film immersive audio technology that reconstructs "virtual sound objects" in space through real-time calculations. Mr. Wang Lengshuang's speech also analyzed and compared the applications of WFS (Wave Field Synthesis) and VBAP (Vector Base Amplitude Panning) technologies in immersive audio reproduction.

 

During the event, Mr. Tian Yuan, the application development manager at PCI Company, demonstrated the effect of the 16-channel DTS-X immersive audio system. The continuous and accurate sound imaging of DTS-X left a profound impression on the attending audience. DTS-X is an open immersive audio architecture that adopts an object-based production philosophy and VBAP replay technology. It can use Q-SYS Core as its renderer during playback. Compared to other closed immersive audio solutions, DTS-X offers better flexibility and cost-effectiveness. The DTS-X solution is also suitable for venues with special custom content sources.
